The Summer Country Maureen Pierce James A Hetley 9780441012206 Books

I've been reading mostly Hetley for several weeks Cruised through the Stonefort books and came to the summer land hoping for more. I GOT MORE! Sorry about the shouting. I think I'm becoming a fanboy in my old age.

Summer is about two lovely Gaelic ladies, stolen away to the Summer Country as slaves, who set out to demonstrate just how poor an idea that would be.

It seems like a complete story arc, but Hetley leaves ample clues that the ladies haven't reached the end of their tales, and that I'll be spending more nights curled around my Kindle with a good Hetley.

The Summer Country Maureen Pierce James A Hetley 9780441012206 Books Reviews

After having read glowing reviews of this book I decided to read it - what better way of procrastinating from school work than reading fantasy, right? The opening chapter was quite promising, and I kept on reading -

- which I should not have. Half-way through the book I was so annoyed with the characters and the author that I was almost contemplating setting it on fire. The characters do not develop and the story becomes increasingly predictable as the pages trot by, seemingly never-ending. I was waiting for things to develop, to change, to surprise me, but nothing happened it was as if the reader had been cut off from a long journey through the mind of a over-indulgent fantasy-reading copycat for a writer, who just kept on running in a circle inside his own mental universe. The reader was never invited into that universe, nor able to understand the narcissistic fascination the writer nurtured for said universe. In the end, when the writer had fully exhausted his meager ability to assemble phrases in the English language, the story came to a crashing halt - but nothing had fundamentally changed. Perhaps it is too much to look for a decent psychological development - especially in a book that at an early stage overtly deals with psychology! - but still. Nothing. Stereotypical, bland and utmost disappointing - that sums it up.

Ugh. For someone who's used to George R R Martin's mind and pen, this book was not only bad, but painful.
I love having a physical copy of a book sometimes to lean back with, and this didn't disappoint. it was in pretty good condition and the story was good too! could have used less flashbacks from the main character as a reason for everything she does, but still made me want more from the world.
That says it all. If your first book ranks right up there with Charles de Lint, then you have got to be one heck of a writer. I really did think of deLint while reading this book, though I didnt find it as lyrical as deLint. Quite a bit less 'magical' though just as much or more of magic.
The characters really drive this story. This is especially true of Maureen (Mo) and Jo, sisters raised in the mythical land of Maine. Oh, that's right, Maine is real. OK, they are real-world characters. But they are very strange real-world characters and we soon find out why. Mo has hangups that stem from rather mundane sources but she has what she thinks are delusions that turn out not to be delusions. David is Jo's boyfriend and a guitarist and he seems like part of the background at first but he is an important part of the story. Brian is the mysterious stranger who helps Mo out in a tough spot but winds up needing her help himself.
The settings are Maine on the edge of winter and a fairy-tale land called The Summer Country. The people of the latter are ruthless and often immensely powerful but they didn't reckon with Mo and Jo.
The events of the story are perhaps the least satisfying. A great deal happens but the later events go so quickly and the sisters solve their terrible problems in such simple fashions that the ending is not quite five-star.
It is possible that the sequel will make the whole thing more satisfying.
This is a daring piece of work and I really enjoyed it. Hetley tackles some extremely touchy issues in delving into the character of Maureen. It takes a little longer to gather sympathy for her sister, but by the end I was rooting for the whole set.

In my fantasy, I am always cognizant of magic having a price. Guy Kay does this very well, and Hetley points out that an enchanted realm is not always sweetness and light. This is not Disney.

A powerful and energizing book that will leave you breathless.
All sorts of mayhem happen to our heroines and heroes, but they triumph in the end. The author drags out the violence a bit too much, and there are monstrous villains and, of course, some hot sex. But a pretty good read.
I really tried to like this book. There is no plot to speak of, as we stagger from one psychotic scene to another. Psychotic being the characters and the scenes that just address one awful flaw after another. Will be reading book 2 because I purchased then together ; (.
