Some novels should come with warnings. But to be honest, like the somewhat distracted protagonist of Unfinished Muse, Wynter Greene, I too sometimes skim over the fine print…so there might have been small print I missed on my way to Chapter One. Speaking of Chapter One, damn! It was like flypaper for unwary readers! It just grabbed me and wouldn’t let me go. More honesty? I don’t think a warning would have helped. We find Wynter having just arrived home from one of those days we’ve all had, but never quite fully recover from—you know, the kind of full length mirror day that won’t let you look away from your own troubling reflection. It was the kind of day that makes you glad you live alone. And poor Wynter thought that she did live alone, right up until her philodendron (Phyllis) pipes up and points out the obvious: Wynter Greene had finally, inevitably, hit rock bottom.A talking house plant? I didn’t see that coming. Laughing out loud, often? Nope. Complete shock to me…and probably the guys in the next apartment too. There was also no warning that the Mount Olympus Employment Agency (In Topeka, Kansas, no less!) was a portal to the real home of the legendary of Greek God’s and Goddesses…well, unless you count the receptionist, Patrice, who wore mirrored sunglasses and had snakes for hair. The fun and the surprises throughout this book are too numerous to mention. And, like the first chapter, the book was extremely difficult to put down. I was, at first, sad to see Wynter’s mythical comeback novel come to an end. Yes, I had that much fun reading it! But, two things softened the blow. First, it turns out author R. L. Naguin (new author for me) wrote a series about Wynter! So, I bought Book Two immediately. The second surprise at the end of Unfinished Muse was a freebie: a delightful short story about Patrice the receptionist/gorgon. I won’t spoil it for you, but the story of her coming-of-age (turning 20) was summed up best in her own words: “I was still going with the idea that this was a terrible nightmare. Even worse than the one about the blood-filled water balloon fight with Christopher Walken.”

Unfinished Muse Mt Olympus Employment Agency Muse Book 1 eBook RL Naquin Reviews
I just loved this book! I was a little sad that the Monster Haven books weren't coming out fast enough for me and I hesitated to try a new series but I actually think I'm going to like the Mt Olympus Employment Agency books even MORE than I did Monster Haven! I didn't expect that! Love this author so much and I want to pre-order the next books in this series. The books are humorous without trying too hard to be funny. I really cared about all the characters. I highly recommend reading anything by R.L. Naquin.
I loved Naquin's Monster Haven series. I was thrilled when I saw a new book was available and then less thrilled when I saw the description. I am not a big fan of urban fantasy books set in a Greek/Roman-mythology/gods-are-real verse. Initially, I found myself warming to Phyllis, the houseplant faster than the main character, Wynter. Uh-oh, I thought, sighed and continued to read. I am glad I did. I give this book a 3.5 which I will round up to a 4 because while I was slow to get into it, Naquin is a gifted author and by the end, I found myself looking forward to book #2.
"Unfinished Muse" by R.L. Naquin is a fun modern mythology novel. At twenty four, Wynter Greene has hit bottom. She's quite her job and dumped her boyfriend all in one day, and worse of all she'll likely have to move back in with her mother if she can't find something fast. The straw that breaks her metamorphic camel's back, is when she throws out a quilt she's been working on for a few years. Seemly out of no where her potted philodendron starts talking to her, and won't quit until she's listened to what she has to say. Wynter is to report the Mt. Olympus Employment Agency in order to get her life back on track. Will Wynter ever learn not to give up? Or is she doomed for the Underworld. Overall, I really enjoyed this novel. It was a fun and fast read filled with quirky characters and lots of character growth for the main character. If you like novels that take place in the present that include a twist of mythology, then this is for you! Hope you enjoy it as much as I did and I can't wait to read the sequel!
This book sounded like a lot of fun. I liked the idea of seeing our main character pull herself together and learn how to navigate her new world. However, the execution of the idea wasn't that great. I never really felt a connection to Wynter. I think she was just too nonchalant about everything. The book opens with a lot of brooding about how she quit her job and dumped her boyfriend on the same day, with no explanation of why she did either, beyond the fact that it's something she does again and again. The employment agency was fun, but not enough to balance out that Wynter didn't give us any reason to care about her story.
Winter have never finished anything in her entire life.
Every project she ever started lays in her closet in a bag, deserted and forgotten. Much like so much else in her life. Wynther is a loner always was. She never was very social.
Until one day the Fates got enough and sent her to Mt. Olympus to straighten up her life. And what a change she was about to receive.
This is the first book in Rachel's new series Mt. Olympus Employment Agency and I loved every page.
Due to things happening in my life, I had to take a rather long break from the book, but when I got back, I could pick it right up again. I remembered everything. In a good way.
Whynter is amazing and I love her spirit, how relatable she is to me. Phyllis her talking houseplant is hilarious, and so very caring. Reading Wynther's reaction when Phyllis opened her "mouth" the first time... *giggles*
Now, there's probably a few of you that have read Rachel's last series, the Monster Haven series and wonders how her new is compared to that.
It's just as amazing. The humor is still there, the details Rachel had to the different monsters in her Monster Haven series, she has the same eye for details in the new series to the different myths from Greece.
I loved it, and can't wait to dive into the next book!
