Breaking Lauren isn't your typical, "good girl meets bad boy" type of story. Ms. Deen cleverly reverses many teen stereotypes in this series.
High school is a tough age and for Lauren McIntosh it's even tougher. Her world is unexpectedly turned upside down when her perfect family image is shattered. As a result, her parents move her half way across the country in hopes to wipe the slate clean and start over.
It would appear, in the beginning, that Lauren's plan to achieve the all - American dream is within reach. She buddies up to the A list crowd. She even catches the attention of Josh, the captain of the football team, but he's not the only guy whose noticed her. Danny and his friends are more than rough around the edges but something about them draws Lauren in.
Josh is the stereotypical perfect guy and Lauren is convinced he's Mr. Right. The problem is, even though Danny is supposed to be Mr. Wrong her heart isn't convinced of that fact.
This story is a real emotional roller coaster and I enjoyed every single twist and turn. If you're a lover of romance high school drama this is the book for you! It's a five star read!

Breaking Lauren Jordan Deen 9781612961101 Books Reviews

I was immediately drawn to Lauren. Her idealistic approach to the world may come across as naive or uneducated to some but what harm is there in picturing a perfect life? Her parents may not be the best example but don't we all have that silent wish to make sure things turn out better for ourselves than it did for our parents?

When she moves to California and meets Danny, the complete opposite of her, as a reader I automatically questioned his placement in the story. Is the story really about love or is Breaking Lauren about something deeper? For me, this was a story of social convention and seeking out your true self emotionally. Lauren was all set to fall into the trap of being who people wanted her to be, she wanted to be normal, just like everyone else. But her heart showed her one way while her mind pointed her in a different direction.

As Deen takes the reader through Lauren's each and every emotion, you feel for her. More importantly, as a mother this story offered a chance to look into a young teen's mind and what their expectations are. Deen offers a cohesive plot but I only felt that some scenes were more described than they should have been.

Would I recommend this read? Yes, if you are a teenager trying to fit in, this book will speak volumes. For parents, trying to understand a teenager's expectations of the world and beyond, this is a good take despite being a fiction novel.

Disclosure I received a review copy of this book from the author. I did not receive any payment in exchange for this review nor was I obliged to write a positive one.
My first impression was - Nothing extraordinary. The first 20% of the book is your everyday young adult read and functions to inform the reader of the main characters. The author's use of semi-colons are questionable but there is nothing wrong with the editing to the point you'll want to stop reading. The author's ability to portray what the characters were feeling kept me interested. For example, "tremors spread through my body like personal earthquakes..."

As I got to the middle, I felt - I was emotionally involved with Lauren. Jordan Deen makes every effort for the reader to fully understand Lauren's decisions and Danny's background. While these interactions may not seem the best thing for each of them, the reader observes changes for the better in both main characters. I'm very curious by now to see how things will end for Lauren.

As I neared the end, I thought - Schucks. Danny and Lauren are heading somewhere but I doubt that I'll find out in this book. The changes in POV reflect that they are both going through emotional rollercoasters and although they love each other, their excess baggage is not easy to deal with. Lauren needs to stand up for herself and Danny needs to say what he really feels. Hmmm, did I just describe every other relationship I know.

My final impression and recommendations - Ugh. Cliffhanger. I was right. So much more to find out in the next book which I hope will be soon. I connected the most with Lauren because she is like every teenage girl who wants to belong. Even if this sense of belonging might emotionally destroy her, she needs to have it. Danny on the other hand is searching - mentally and emotionally. Whether their needs are actually met by each other, I'll just have to wait. This was a good book. I have read Jordan Deen's The Crescent and this was definitely different. The plot, characterisation and story development are proof of a talented author at work. Must read.
